Daniel arrived here at about 7:00 Sunday evening. It has been been unusually cold here, the lows for the last 2 nights were 23 and 21. The electric heater died during the night Sunday. This morning (Monday) we drove into Yucca Valley for a new heater and groceries. When we got home Dan used my mountain bike and we rode to park HQ and then home through town. I changed into walking duds and we walked the Bagdad Highway Loop getting home just about dark. I made fried chicken and rice with veggies for dinner. Good! The possibility exists for snow showers tomorrow when the real cold arrives from Alaska.

Walked down to Home Depot in hopes of getting the plumbing connectors I need to finish my under sink water filter installation. Of course they did not have them but it was a good workout. A beautiful high 60's LA winter afternoon.

A chilly ride at the limits of my outfit, shorts, heavy jersey, sandals, no socks, and bicycle jacket. A few degrees cooler and I will need something on my legs and maybe a neck warmer. Fortunately daytime temps seldom drop below today's here. I have only been on colder rides in the park at the 4-5,000 foot level at night in December.

Other than the coolness it was a pleasant ride. A good way to spend an hour.

A pleasant if cool ride to park HQ with a loop home through town and Mesquite Springs Road. I wore my Pearl Izumi long sleeve heavy jersey. It is one of the few times I have used it. It was just about right.

Above: Packed up and ready to go in the morning.

I got up at 8:00. Like last night I did not feel like messing with the stove so I drank a coke while packing. I got on the road a bit before 10:00 and had an easy downhill 8 mile run to the start of the 4 mile climb up to the Highway 62/177 junction. It took almost an hour to do the climb. When I reached the junction I stopped and had a Cliff Bar and a bottle of electrolyte water. I was not a happy camper. No coffee. A headwind. Rain the next day. Not relishing long nights in the tent. In short I decided to wuss out and come home.

At the Highway 62/177 Junction:

I started back about noon and coasted to the bottom of the hill which had taken an hour to climb in about 15 minutes and started back up the long roughly 12 mile climb to the first summit of Sheephole Wilderness. I stopped for a quick break and to change from my new baggy shorts to the old faithful and more comfortable tight bike shorts at Sheephole Valley Road. From there I ground out the 8 miles to the top with a short break or two. It actually went better than expected and I got to the cutoff to what I call Sheephole Lake which is 31 miles from home at 3:00 PM. After a break there where I drank my second and last Coke and put on a fleece sweater as it was quite chilly in the wind I did a short climb then coasted about 11 miles to the low point of the Wonder Valley and started climbing the last 20 miles back to town. Sometime after sunset I stopped and set up all my lights. I started my phone GPS app and saw I was still 14 miles from home. I had hoped I was a few miles closer but it was what it was and I had no choice but to keep going. I reached the airport which is 8.5 miles from home at about 6:00 and got home at 7:00.

At the airport:

The statistics: I seem to have inadvertently shut off the Strava app recording at Sheephole Lake cutoff coming back. Strava registered 28.1 miles and the statistics above other than mileage are what was recorded and are obviously very incomplete. I computed the days total miles using Google maps.

The bike computer: I found it in the morning in the ditty bag in the handlebar bag. I had no recollection of putting it in the ditty. Old age is swell.

Other Bike Tourists: As I was preparing to leave my stop at Sheephole Valley Road what I took to be a very small woman pulled onto the turnout about 100 yards behind me. I said hello and started up the hill. As I climbed I was hearing noises I thought were coming from the bike. I got off and was looking for the source (it turned out to be the Cliff Bar in my jacket pocket) when a man towing a two wheel kiddie trailer passed me followed by the small female who turned out to be a young girl. I started again and was soon overtaken by a woman towing one of the one wheel kids bike type trailers (it looks like a kids bike but instead of a front wheel it is hitched to the adult bike) with a young girl aboard. The woman had a British accent and told me she was indeed English but that the rest of the family was Swiss and that the little girl ahead was 9. She pulled away and in a few minutes another woman overtook me with a young lad on her bicycle/trailer (maybe a twin of the girl on the other trailer/bike). She chatted with me awhile and I learned they had started in San Francisco and come down through Death Valley to Las Vegas and were headed to 29 Palms to wait out the rain and then were going on to San Diego. They were going twice my pace and I was impressed by their ability to go uphill so fast. I thought most of their equipment must be in the mans covered kiddie trailer. About 3 miles up the hill I came upon a VW bus parked in a turnout with a young lady sitting against it. I asked if she was OK an she said yes, she was just waiting on the family. It turns out she was the group's support team and the bus was jammed to the gills with stuff. That answered a bunch of questions but the speed these people were making was impressive, loaded or not. I saw many motorcyclists but no other bicyclists.

My Load: Since I knew I was not in the shape I was in when I rode over this road in 2013 and was not sure how long it would take me to get to the first water at 95 miles I left the house with 3 gallons of water. That is 24 pounds. In 2013 I carried about 1 1/2 gallons from home (12 pounds) and my bike and load weighed 90 pounds. I had extra winter warm stuff and more food this time so I am guessing the total bike and load was well over 100 pounds. I brought most of the food home but drank about a gallon of water over both days and dumped a gallon on the ground at Sheephole Valley Road coming back.

After a lot of angst about the weather and touring at this time of year in general I decided to take a shot at my planned tour to the low desert and packed the bike last night. This morning I finished the details, took a shower, shut down the trailer and left home about 11:00. My plan was to take an easy ride east and see where I ended up. I thought 35-30 miles would be plenty but the ride was less taxing than I anticipated and I made 41 miles with no problem. I could have made the 45 to Sheephole Valley Road where I have camped two times previously but when I saw a suitable spot about 4 miles short I decided to take it as daylight was running out. I stopped and set up camp, ate some canned food and got into the tent and sleeping bag about 6:00 knowing I had a long night ahead.

I wrote a few notes on my tablet then started dozing. At about 7:00 and again at 8:00 I had nasty episodes of cramps and spasms of the big muscles in the back of my thighs. They were intense enough to wake me up and cause me to wonder if I might be having some kind of strange heart attack.I believe I have read of such symptoms. At 7:00 I took an electrolyte capsule with some water. At 8:00 I took two capsules and washed them down with a bottle of water with an electrolyte tablet dissolved in it. The tablets are a sweetened mix which fizz up when put in water. I have been avoiding them in my effort to stop ingesting artificial sweeteners. The capsules are the same basic mix unsweetened. This dose seemed so resolve the situation and I only had a few twinges the rest of the night. This was all poor electrolyte management I am sure. I had ridden 41 miles with one 24 ounce bottle of water and one 12 ounce Coke. Hardly prudent. I will be more careful tomorrow.

I woke up at 4:00 and wrote more notes. It was a warm night, warmer outside than on the ground in the tent. I wanted to find my bike computer to check the temperature but could not find it in my handlebar bag even after taking everything out at least twice.

When I first got in the tent I plugged my phone into my new lithium USB battery. It took the phone from 15% to fully charged in about an hour and still showed a full charge. Very good! Theoretically it will charge the phone completely 6 times.

I finally got back to sleep and slept until 8:00. All in all a good day and night.

An easy ride to Park HQ and home through town. My legs are tired today from the 24 miles on the heavy bike yesterday. I am not used to it. If I was on a tour I probably would have poked along for a few hours today and called it a day. That is exactly the plan if I go out. I lowered the nose of the seat a few notches and used yesterday's short/liner combo and it was better with the seat down.

Before this ride I took my neighbor Ron's new Walmart Mongoose fat tire bike for a short spin including a few hundred yards in the sandy desert across the street. My review? It is heavy and cumbersome on pavement but as Ron said it really floats in the sand. I was surprised to float across stuff you could not get even a few feet in with even a standard mountain bike. At my age I would have to lower the gearing considerably. As it sits it is a 7 speed with about 40 x 28 as the lowest gear. I estimate about 39 gear inches (Sheldon Brown has no 26 x 4" tires in his calculator so I used 29 x 1/9"), more than twice what I need for any hills especially in sand. It is a very cool looking bike though:

A beautiful day for a ride on the tour bike. The purpose was to test new Canari liner shorts with a pair of my Levi shorts. They work pretty well but are still not as comfy as plain road bike shorts. I need to experiment with different over shorts to see if I can find a combination that is as comfortable as bike shorts.

As always the tour bike was a pleasure to ride. It is heavier and slower than my other bikes but has a certain charm. Every time I ride it I feel the urge to go, to hit the road on a tour.

Be glad your car does not need AV Gas:

First ride on road bike for a couple of weeks. I was gone last week and have ridden the 3 speed around my home a few times before leaving and since returning. I was surprised by the chill in the air. I pulled to the curb at Luckie Park and put the sleeves on my jacket/vest. Winter is here?

Decent ride on a cool day. The plants at Park HQ are starting to recover from the long hot summer:

I have been working on my Ural the last 2 afternoons: fluids change, new oil filter o-ring, new engine oil drain plug washer, new spark plugs, fuel filters, air pipes and new Duro front tire. I am happy to say I was able to mount the new tire myself. The bike is running well and hopefully the new o-ring a drain plug washer will stop the annoying oil leaks. I also took it to the car wash and sprayed off the oil and gunk from the engine and rear end and rinsed the whole bike off at home.

Last night I set up a table and started the winter jigsaw puzzle fest.
