Mel is a member of the Desert Tortoise Bicycle Club as am I and a friend of my good buddy Doug. We have exchanged a few comments about each other's rides on Strava.com and started talking about meeting for a ride on a Friday or Saturday a week or two ago. After some back and forth we agreed to meet today for a ride. We live at about the same distance from the corner of Utah Trail and Amboy Road in opposite directions. We had agreed to meet there at 7:00 AM. We arrived within seconds of each other, introduced ourselves and decided to do the usual Airport Loop.

It was cooler at that time of day than at my usual riding times at later hours but it was comfortable, about 70. Once we got off of Adobe Road and past Utah Trail on Valley Vista the traffic was light and we were able to ride side by side and talk except when we got back on the busier roads, Amboy and Highway 62.

It was another 29 Palms day where no matter which direction one goes in there seems to be a headwind. Fortunately it was mild at least until we started back towards town on Highway 62 then it got a bit annoying especially in combination with the moderate climb. We came down Utah from the highway without a stop at JTNP Headquarters and went our separate ways at Amboy Road.

All in all it was an very enjoyable ride and I really liked meeting Mel and getting to know him. I look forward to riding with him again.
