A pleasant and uneventful (if you don't count being passed much too closely by a few autos) ride on a warm sunny afternoon with a mild E breeze. The bike seems a bit short in the gear department but my average speed is actually better with it than with the 2 previous iterations (55 now, 59 and 74 gear inches previously).

I am seriously looking at 3 speed internally geared hub wheels now. If I get the Shimano Nexus 3 speed and use a 22 tooth sprocket on it I will have 37/50/68 gear inches which might be about right for the local terrain. A 20 tooth sprocket which I already have gives 40/55/75 which will work. A 24 tooth might be best, giving 34/46/62. The 62 is low enough for most of the "cruising" around here and would leave to decent uphill or into the wind gears. 24 is the max sprocket size. The next step is to go to a 39 tooth chain ring with the 24 sprocket. This gives 32/44/60 which may be ideal fro my legs at least as they are now. I can go as low as 34 on the chain ring which results in 28/38/52. This would probably be about right if I wanted to pull a trailer and do some light touring with this bike although the 28 is not really low enough for serious hills with a load.
